Scala and the village of Pontone

Scala Municipality overlook the Amalfi Coast from its high rocky mountains, about 400 meters above sea level. Together with the nearby Ravello, has been one of the main bulwarks of the coastal defense starting from Middle Ages. After all those years the village has retained that ancient atmosphere as shown, in fact, in its skyline full of history.

Some of monuments are Scala's Cathedral San Lorenzo (dedicated the village patron), located in the Main Square, and the Bishop's Palace.

Important is to notice that the oldest town of Amalfi; Scala host each year from 11 August to 11 September, an international event, "Scala meets New York" to commemorate the relationship between the two city with musical performances and cultural events. While, from July to August, it advocates the ancient union between the heirs and Rufolo Coppola with "Medieval Wedding." On the way to Scala from Pontone there is the mansion of Palazzo Verone.

Pontone is dominated by old mansion historical churches and towers: the Church of St. Giovanni, the remains of the Basilica of St. Eustace and the Tower of Ziro. About hiking path from Pontone starts the "Nature Reserve" in the "Valley of the Iron Mills" and a steps from the "Path of the Gods".

The "Valley of the Iron Mills" is a "Natural Reserve" that preserves within it, in a typically tropical coves and breathtaking waterfalls, one of the oldest trees and from rare pre-glacial period: a fern bulbifera better known with the name of "Woodwardia Radicans".

She has found in the Valley her natural habitat due to a micro-climate (hot and humid) and she is protected under a National Program of the State Forestry Corps.
